Race Report - Eton Super Sprints 19th May 2007
The first day of the Doney Eton Super Sprints weekend saw some impressive action from Eton Tri Athletes. The weather was cool and blustery, and ideally suited to a couple of pints in a public house, but several hardy souls braved then near-average conditions to represent the club at this prestigiously expensive event.
Pick of the day's achievements was Phil Wege, who romped home as the 45-49 age group winner. Phil was 5th out of the water and put in an excellent bike leg to start the run in second place. A sterling effort on the run course saw him overhaul the leader and win the race with a 5km run split of 18.38 and final time of 1:00:24. Well done Phil!
Phil received a £50 voucher for his efforts to spend anywhere, as long as it was in the TriAndRun shop that was there on the day. Marvellous. Shame it cost £51 to enter!
Steve Horton also represented Eton in the same age group. Sporting a pair of raciest briefs ever to grace the banks of Dorney Rowing lake, long-time member Steve endured some cramps early on the run leg to finish in 1:09:31.
Mark Wilson took time off from devising fiendishly complicated club championship rules to represent Eton and put in an excellent performance in the 37-39 age group. Mark finished in 8th place in 1:06:10, before returning his children's support in their own races. I'm not sure how they got on, but by their dad's calculations they were probably winners.
James Beech represented Eton in the 37-39 age group. James was finding the going a little easy, so decided to add to the drama of the day by taking out a female competitor from a different wave in a (I'm told) spectacular crash. Neither James nor the female were seriously hurt, and James managed to complete the course after returning to transition. James eventually finished in 1:15:07, ending with a competitive run.
Well done to Roberty Mezei who made it round in an excellent 1:07:12 in the 35-36 age group, and to Glenn Helsby, 7th in 1:04:15 in the 40-44s.
Newcomer James Grimstead popped his triathlon cherry at Dorney, topping a good performance in the 25-29 age group with a 5K time of 19:18 to finish 16th in 1:04:03.
