Race Report - Eton Super Sprints 20th May 2007

Relieved to find friendlier conditions on Sunday!
Swim start was total chaos. We were all called in for the pre race brief which was rapidly followed without warning by the start horn. Something resembling a saloon bar brawl with water started and I realised we were off. Got my goggles knocked off so flailed my arms around a bit for good measure! It wasn't til the second turn that I realised that I should just let the guy, who was throwing water down my throat, go in front. After that I began swimming properly, overtook him quickly and was able to finish the swim in one piece. Went out too fast on the bike and it took a couple of laps before the heart rate came down to manageable. Passed a few bikes and was taken by one on a smart Felt fancydoobiecarbonything. T2 was a bit more controlled and started the run thinking I could catch Felt fancydoobiecarbonything rider. As I started, my wife informed me I was in 4th place! No way! Not too much pressure then. Anyway, Felt fancydoobiecarbonything rider ended up 2nd and some spoilsport behind me ran faster and pushed me into 5th, but that's better than I ever expected. Time was 1:02:31, and run time was 20:12, not bad for a fat bloke, and all down to some excellent track sessions with Chris. Thanks Chris. Didn't hang around after that as I had Heineken Cup tickets, so shot up to Twickers to watch the Mighty Wasps give the Tigers a good hosing. What a day!
